Fatigue Management & sleep Solutions Australia - Dr. Paula Mitchell

Dr Paula Mitchell, BSc (Hons), PhD, MAPS

Dr Paula Mitchell is the Managing Director and Principal Consultant of FMSSA. Paula draws on the expertise of a team of highly experienced and specialised consultants as required. These professionals include sleep psychologists, health psychologists, safety advisors, human factors experts and executive coaches.

Paula is a registered psychologist with over 20 years’ experience specialising in sleep, fatigue and shiftwork. During this time, she has provided consultancy services to a wide range of corporate, government and community organisations, undertaken leading scientific research, and operated a clinical practice for individuals experiencing sleeping problems.

Paula has worked extensively with clients in a variety of 24/7 industries, including mining, oil and gas, rail and road transport, manufacturing and telecommunications. She has also worked with typically non-shiftworking organisations like law firms and government departments whose roles require light vehicle driving or working extended hours. Paula’s consulting work has involved conducting fatigue risk assessments and fatigue risk management system gap analyses, developing fatigue risk management processes, policies and procedures, and she is particularly passionate about developing and delivering fun, engaging and effective fatigue management and sleep management training programs. Paula believes that the key to facilitating tangible behavioural change through training is in ensuring that the material is operationally practical, relatable to the specific target audience, and that it highlights the shared responsibility and personal accountability of fatigue management.

Paula completed BSc (Hons) and PhD degrees at Monash University, where her PhD examined caffeine and individual differences in circadian rhythms. Soon after, she was offered a post-doctoral research fellowship in Chicago, investigating the use of bright light therapy to help adjustment to shiftwork. Her post-doctoral work led to her winning several Australian and American scientific awards. Paula has lectured extensively on sleep, fatigue and circadian rhythms to undergraduate and postgraduate students at several tertiary institutions. She has presented many papers at both national and international conferences, has been an invited speaker at numerous industry conferences and professional meetings and has given many media interviews on sleep-related issues. For many years, Paula also served on the Executive Committee of local road safety committees, with a particular focus on raising community awareness of the dangers of driver fatigue.

Paula is a member of the Australian Psychological Society, the Australasian Sleep Association, the Sleep Health Foundation and the Safety Institute of Australia.
